Saskatoon police seek to calm public after Edmonton attack

Police searching for suspect after officer injured in altercation near Eskimos gameMore

The White House, in a statement released Sunday, condemned the "cowardly terror attacks on a police officer and pedestrians" in Edmonton. The attacker was taken into custody and a criminal investigation into his act of terrorism was launched.

A flag belonging to so-called Islamic State was found inside the vehicle that hit the police officer.

The attacks in Edmonton started outside a football game on Saturday night, when a police officer was struck by a auto and then stabbed several times. The driver then got out and began stabbing the officer, Const. Mike Chernyk.

Then around 11:33, a U-Haul truck was stopped during a traffic stop, but fled the scene, hitting four pedestrians before the tactical unit conducted a maneuver to put it on its side and the driver was taken into custody.

Chief Rod Knecht say they are investigating the incident using section 83.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada. Four people have been injured and brought to hospital.

Just before midnight, police said, the suspect led officers on a high-speed chase while driving a U-Haul truck.

Trudeau said Sunday that he was deeply concerned and outraged at what he called a "terrorist attack".

Police say the vehicle swerved at pedestrians at crosswalks throughout the chase.

Mr. Knecht also said that the 30-year-old suspect was known to the authorities, before specifying that after the knife attack on the policeman, the security forces did not expect a second importance.

Degrand said files on the suspect were kept and shared with other intelligence and police agencies after 2015, but that was as much as the law would allow.

Officials tell ABC News that the suspect was speeding when he barreled through a police barricade and hit a police officer.

Outside, a white Chevrolet auto suddenly burst past a police barricade, hitting a policeman who was performing routine checks and propelling him a distance of several feet. Investigators determined at that time that he did not pose a threat.

The officer while checking the driver's licence, recognised the name as being similar to that of the registered owner of the Malibu used in the earlier attack.

"To the best of our knowledge, this was a lone-wolf attack", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson said.

"We know that Canada's strength comes from our diversity, and we will not be cowed by those who seek to divide us or promote fear".
