Syrian forces respond to new Israeli violation

Israel acknowledges carrying out dozens of air strikes in Syria to stop what it calls advanced arms deliveries to Hezbollah

Israeli jets on a reconnaissance run over Lebanon have destroyed an anti-aircraft missile launcher in neighbouring Syria after coming under fire from it.

Monday's unusual incident between Syria and Israel says something about the modern Middle East.

The anti-aircraft battery disabled in this attack had, according to Israeli intelligence, been the site of a confrontation in March with the Syrians.

According to media reports, the Israeli air force came out of the episode without any damage. Unless the Syrians decide on similar attacks in the future, which will force Israel to respond again.

The incident comes as Russian Defense Minister Minister Sergei Shoigu was set to meet with officials in Israel.

"In response, IDF aircraft targeted the anti-aircraft battery in Syria", it added.

"Earlier today, an anti-aircraft missile was launched from Syria towards IDF aircraft during a routine flight over Lebanon".

A US-led coalition backs some of the militia groups that want to overthrow Assad, including SDF and Free Syrian Army.

The Russian military is allied with Assad and operates extensively in the war-torn country, and so an airstrike against Syrian forces hours before Shoigu lands in Tel Aviv would likely require a more serious consideration and approval process. Russian Federation and Israel have established a hotline to avoid accidental clashes in Syria. Just recently, former IAF commander Amir Eshel told Haaretz that Israel has conducted nearly 100 airstrikes in Syria over the last five years against convoys ferrying arms to Hezbollah and other organizations.

Israeli officials do not typically discuss the full extent of the coordination between the two militaries, but stress that the IDF does not seek Russian permission before carrying out airstrikes in Syria.

"Preserving the relative stability is a common interest", the lieutenant colonel said.

Israeli jets have routinely bombed positions near the Israeli-Syrian border during the latter's gruesome 5-year long war; these attacks are usually to target Hezbollah leaders in Syria. It has also occasionally carried out limited reprisals along its frontier with Syria in the Golan Heights, after spillover of Syria's fighting. The missile didn't threaten the plane, but Israel decided not to let it pass.
