Travelers Wary Of El Capitan After Days Of Rockfalls, Park Still Open

Climber crushed by Yosemite rockfall was on 'dream' trip with wife

Park officials say rock falls overall have killed 16 people since 1857 and injured more than 100.

Scott Gediman, from the park, said: From what I understand they were buried under rock... they were crushed by falling rocks. There's no word on his condition.

On Thursday a slab of granite tumbled off the park's famous climbing destination El Capitan, injuring an elderly man driving nearby. Nature is powerful and we are small and there is something necessary in that I think. But fatalities are rare. Rescuers reached them within an hour and pulled them from the rubble, where they were trapped under a rock, Gediman said.

The National Park Service sent a helicopter to rescue the unidentified climber, who fell 30 feet, and take her to a hospital, according to SFGate.

It's the second rock slide in as many days, during the peak of climbing season.

He said Wednesday he did not know who was killed and injured and did not immediately respond Thursday to phone and email messages seeking updated information. The couple were at the base of El Capitan when the rockfall occurred.

Officials had no immediate estimate for how much the big rock weighed but Gediman says all of the rock falls Wednesday weighed 1,300 tons (1,100 metric tons) combined. I've never seen. the park like that before.

"It was done at tremendous peril to the rescuers because there were three subsequent rock falls that were all almost as big and would have killed anybody at the base", he said.

Zabor had just climbed the section that collapsed Thursday and was able to record video showing the massive dust cloud.

Canadian climber Peter Zabrok described the rock that fell as "white granite the size of an apartment building", adding that it suddenly peeled off the wall with no warning.

A huge chunk of granite killed a British tourist, Andrew Foster, 32, of Wales, while he and his wife were hiking at the bottom of El Capitan.

"It's kind of an inherently unsafe sport", Hayden Jamieson, 24, of Mammoth Lakes, California, said as he prepared to head up El Capitan early Saturday. Californian Chris Koenig said he visits Yosemite a lot.
