A national Christmas tree shortage impacts the Valley

"We have farms in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina", said Jimmy Coan, owner of Papa Noel Christmas trees.

He says depending on the type of tree, he believes the shortage is expected to last about five years.

That shortage means finding a tree may be harder, and buying it may be more expensive.

"It makes you feel good get in the spirit of Christmas, not so much commercialism just a symbol of a Christmas tree, so it helps to get in the spirit of Christmas", Wilmington visitor Steve Odee said.

Honey Bear has tried to keep its prices for smaller trees in line with recent years, given that people with fewer economic resources tend to purchase those trees. Toward Huntington, though, the leader of Boy Scout Troop 63 tells WSAZ their tree order was cancelled, ending a almost 40-year tradition of selling fresh Christmas trees.

"Bear in mind that a Christmas tree takes 10-15 years to grow", said Coan.

Going to pick out a Christmas tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving is tradition for a lot of families. This year was the first time Bakersfield resident, Amy Patterson, went home with a precut tree.

"So yeah, we're having trouble filling the orders that we have", he said.

"If there were no Christmas trees, where would Santa put your presents?" The couple sold "choose and cut" trees for the past 30 years, and precut trees for the past 20 years. Macy tried to purchase Grand firs from OR, but the farmer had to cancel the sale because a heat wave "fried the trees", Macy said.

"It's actually less work for us", New said. They bought a white, artificial one to match their mid-century home previous year.

Witt, who wore a green sequinned Christmas tree headband as she loaded boxes of tree baubles in the vehicle at Home Depot on Friday, does not agree.

As the number of trees making the cut each year shrinks, customers should expect to see a difference on price tags too.

"Locally", he said, "we should be fine".

Predictions for many places are that as we get closer to Christmas, the supply may dwindle even more. Trunk side up trees are more American than trunk side down trees!
