A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and killed during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon on I-45 in Freestone County near Fairfield.

The first shooting happened in Freestone County, about 90 minutes South of Dallas.

Identified as Dabrett Montreal Black, the suspect fled the scene after shooting at the unidentified trooper working for the Department of Public Safety. He is now at large.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Darbrett Black.

He left the scene driving a gray Chevrolet Malibu, license plate number JDN4273, according to KXAS.

Officials said if people see the suspect they should immediately call 911 or local law enforcement.

The body of a Texas state trooper shot and killed during a traffic stop on Thanksgiving is being escorted to a funeral home in Teague, about 98 miles (158 kilometers) south of Dallas. Ted Cruz offered "prayers for the family and loved ones" of the trooper. "Excellent operation by numerous agencies to take this suspect into custody with no additional casualties", the Navarro County Office of Emergency Management said in a statement.

Black has been charged with capital murder of a police officer, and is being held at the Brazos County Jail. Those charges are from Smith County where Tyler is.

Overnight, a Hays County deputy was injured and a suspect found dead after a shooting that occurred while deputies responded to a burglary report in Wimberley, officials said.

The $500,000 bond is for two charges, Assault of a Public Servant, and Evading arrest. This trooper died selflessly serving Texas. Abbott also expressed his "most honest condolences" to the trooper's family.
