Facebook wants you to upload nude photos to combat 'revenge porn'

Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

Facebook is asking some of its users to send them their nude pictures.

Facebook will create a digital fingerprint of a nude picture you flag up to it through Messenger, and automatically block anyone from uploading the same image to the site at a later date.

Obviously, Facebook users are feeling concern about what the social media platform will do with the intimate images once they are uploaded.

At least that is what Facebook and the Australian government is saying to do in a new test aimed at cutting off potential revenge porn before it happens.

All one has got to do is to contact Australia's e-Safety Commissioner (since right now they are trying this in Australia) if they're anxious about the fact that their images might get leaked.

You probably do need some human involvement to prevent people chucking images into the system which *wouldn't* be classified as "revenge porn" (perhaps with mischief in mind, or perhaps in an attempt to prevent the spread of images that they were trying to suppress for other reasons). Facebook may have a solution for you, though maybe not in the way you expect.

"With its billions of users, Facebook is one place where many offenders aggress because they can maximize the harm by broadcasting the nonconsensual porn to those most close to the victim", she said. The company's software creates a "hash" (a digital fingerprint) of your nude photo, which tags that photo if someone else tries to upload it and prevents it from being put on Facebook.

The Office of the E-Safety Commissioner in Australia states that image-based abuse isn't just a matter of revenge porn, however, and that it is a growing problem in the country.

The technology prevents photos that have been previously reported or tagged as porn from being re-shared.

"They're not storing the image, they're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies", e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told ABC. Once Facebook gets that notification, a community operations analyst will access the image and hash it to prevent future instances from being uploaded or shared.

As of September past year, more than 200 people in the United Kingdom had been prosecuted following the introduction of a revenge porn law in 2015.

Let's say you have a spiteful ex who decides to embarrass you by posting a nude photo made in private.

The trial is the latest in several measures Facebook has taken to clamp down on the sharing of revenge porn.
