GI tag says West Bengal is where the 'rosogolla' originated

It's official Rasgulla belongs to West Bengal not Odisha

West Bengal and Odisha have been engaged in a legal battle over the origin of the syrupy Rosogolla since 2015.

While Bengal claimed stake on its most famous sweet citing history and traditions, Odisha claimed the dish originated in the state and was associated with the puja of Lord Jagannath. The pearly white favorite, while popularly synonymous with Bengal, found itself amid a bitter, cultural tug-of-war in September 2015 when Odisha raised formal objection to West Bengal's Geographical Indication (GI) claim over the sweet that the neighboring state also holds dear to itself. If people of Odisha also think and claim rosogolla as their own, that's also good.

West Bengal's Education Minister Partha Chattetjee said, "Odisha unnecessarily raised a dispute over the issue". He had stated that there is conclusive evidence that Rosogolla has existed in the state for about 600 years.

The Geographical Indications (GI) registry on Tuesday announced that the rosogolla originated in West Bengal and not in Odisha.

However, two years on, and West Bengal can finally claim that the rasgulla is officially theirs. "We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla", she said. He was trying to come up with a new sweet for a number of years before he came up with it , As Reported By Hindustan Times. We are all so happy.

In West Bengal, a confectioner named Nobin Chandra Das is widely known as the one who created the sweet in the 1860s. Abdur Rezzak Mollah, Food Processing Minister stated "Earlier we had fought a similar battle with other states over the GI of Joynogorer Mowa". "So far, we have not received any application from Odisha", official sources in the GI Registrar Office said.

The GI tag was primarily developed with the objective of recognising the unique identity connecting different products and places.

A descendent of Nabin Chandra Das thanked the Mamata Banerjee government for taking the lead in the fight.
