Maine unemployment dips to 3.5% in October

The state unemployment rate dipped to 2.7% in October, a tenth of a percent lower than in September. October's USA rate fell to 4.1 percent from September's 4.2 percent.

The state's total unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in October, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced.

Last month's rate is well below the state's October 2016 rate of 6.1 percent. Since 1990, the highest unemployment rate on the Big Island was recorded in June 1994 at 11.4 percent.

Louisiana's unemployment rate doesn't rank among the 10 worst states for the first time in years. The commonwealth's rate remained above that of the United States, which declined by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.1 percent.

When it comes to jobless rates for the area, Emporia's unemployment figure is 2.9 percent and Lyon County's rate also is 2.9 percent. Honolulu City and County saw its rate decrease from 2.3 percent in September to 1.8 percent last month.

Government employment, at 772,600, increased by 3,300 positions.

Job losses were reported in manufacturing (100); financial activities (300); trade, transportation and utilities (500); professional and business services (500); and educational and health services (600).
