Record-breaking heat wave hits western USA for Thanksgiving

In Burbank (88 degrees), Camarillo (92 degrees) and Oxnard (91 degrees), records that had been set in 1950 were all shattered.

Fresno reached 76 degrees in the 3 o'clock hour Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

If you need to get outside to shop or run off all of that Thanksgiving day food, you're going to love the weather we have in story today across southern Colorado!

The hot, dry conditions can be attributed to a ridge of high pressure lingering above the region, sending desert air flowing toward the coast, an NWS meteorologist told the Los Angeles Times. The average high temperatures for that time of the year range from the lows 30s to upper 20s.

As for Thanksgiving Day itself, the west San Fernando Valley will probably be the hottest area in the L.A. region, Sirard said.

A mini heat wave drove Southland temperatures into record territory Wednesday, setting the stage for an uncommonly warm Thanksgiving Day, when more records are possible.

Downtown Los Angeles reached 93 degrees Wednesday, breaking the record for the date of 89 degrees, set in 1950.

If Thursday's high in downtown Los Angeles reaches 90, as forecast, it would tie a record set on November 23, 1903, Thompson said.

The National Weather Service says downtown Los Angeles could reach 90 degrees, a record.

But by the weekend the warm temperatures will ease and rain returns.
