Saudi Arabia leads Arab nations in condemning Iran, Hezbollah

Iran Accuses Saudi Arabia of Pushing for War

They condemned what they described as Iran's constant meddling in Arab affairs.

Currently at a stalemate, the civil war is now witnessing a Saudi-led coalition blockade which is further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country. Riyadh accused Hezbollah of playing a role in the November 4 ballistic missile attack.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil did not attend.

"No man from Lebanese Hezbollah had any part in the firing of this missile or any missiles fired previously", Nasrallah said. Saudi Arabia subsequently accused Hezbollah and Iran as being behind the attack.

"Saudi Arabia has succeeded through pressure as well as extensive political and propagandistic hue and cry to have a statement that is full of lies and distortions be issued in the name of foreign ministers of the Arab League", Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Bahram Qassemi said Monday, according to Iran's semi-official Press TV.

In statements posted on Twitter, Aoun said Lebanon could not be held "responsible" for regional conflicts.

Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas rejected on Monday an Arab League resolution labelling Lebanon┬┤s Hezbollah a terrorist organisation.

During the meeting Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa was quite vocal against Hezbollah saying it was "in total control" of Lebanon.

Hariri has since Saturday been in Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron, and has said he will return to Lebanon by Wednesday.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir attends a meeting at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital Cairo on November 19, 2017.

A source close to Hariri said that meeting aimed to "continue the series of Arab and global consultations".

"This morning, a decision was taken that Lebanon would be presented by Antoine Azzam, the permanent representative to the Arab League", the source said.

While the Cairo meeting produced a display of unity, Saudi Arabia was largely preaching to the choir.

AFP reports that Saudi Arabia requested for Arab League foreign ministers' meeting to discuss "the violations committed by Iran in the Arab region, which undermines security and peace ... around the globe". "(Iran's) missile program poses a danger to the region", said Aboul-Gheit.

"That doesn't mean they agree to the escalation of Iranian interference in various Arab countries, but paradoxically it was the incompetence and the division among those Arab countries that was the main factor why Iran is able to expand its influence in the region", added Bishara.
