A company in Japan is taking costumer service to the next level by apologizing for one of its trains leaving 20 seconds early.

Management who look after the Tsukuba Express line between Tokyo and Tsukuba released a statement saying that the train should have left at 9:44:40 but instead left at 9:44:20.

According to an article this month on the Gendai Business website, Tsukuba Express, which carries 130 million passengers a year, markets its "safety and high speed".

"It stands to reason, then, that at least a few people would miss a train if it left 20 seconds earlier than usual". We deeply apologize for the severe inconvenience imposed upon our customers. I doubt most people would even notice a 20-second difference, and with trains coming every four minutes on the Tsukuba Express line in the morning, does it really make much of a difference?

No customers had complained about the early departure from Minami Nagareyama Station, which is just north of Tokyo, the company explained.

The unfortunate error occurred because staff had not checked the timetable, the company said in a statement. The company added that the crew of this particular train has been instructed to be more "thorough" in the future about basic train operations. The BBC reports that it's "rare" for trains in Japan to be off-schedule, and another tweet highlights that fact, noting, "Have been on a train in Japan where I heard an apology for the train running one minute late".
