49 nations have violated UN sanctions on North Korea

The Associated Press said that Jeffrey Feltman, UN undersecretary-general for political affairs, met with Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho on the second day of his visit.

Feltman arrived in North Korea on Tuesday and it is the first trip by a United Nations official to the isolated country in over seven years.

Both the UN delegation and the North Korean representatives acknowledged that Feltman's visit contributed to deepening the understanding between North Korea and the UN Secretariat, and both sides agreed to maintain communications through visits at different levels on a regular basis in the future, North Korea's state-owned news agency added.

The United States and South Korea responded with a show of force conducting their largest ever joint air exercise which was a five-day showcase of aircraft and jet fighter capabilities.

There is also a possibility North Korea invited Feltman to request an easing of sanctions, following statements from a North Korean delegation to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO, on November 28, condemning the embargoes. Feltman, who left Pyongyang earlier today, has yet to comment on his trip.

North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly criticizing senior USA administration officials' "bellicose remarks" and the ongoing military exercises. But US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert expressed a somewhat different perspective during the daily press briefing on December 7.

The visit by Feltman, an American citizen and former State Department official, comes amid high tensions on the peninsula fanned by tough talk and posturing by Pyongyang and Washington.

"North Korea has confirmed that Pyongyang is not interested in escalation of the conflict or military action, but it is not afraid of war, as it was formulated in yesterday's statement of [North Korea's] Ministry of Foreign Affairs", Kosachev said.
