Canadian billionaire couple found dead in their mansion basement

Police Investigate 'Suspicious' Death of Prominent Toronto Couple

Toronto billionaire and philanthropist Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman have been found dead in their mansion.

The police had been called to the property just before noon, apparently in response to a medical complaint.

He declined to release the age of the victims, where they were found in the house, whether a weapon was recovered, whether the bodies showed signs of trauma, and who found the bodies. His fortune was estimated at US$3.7 billion.

Apotex posted a message on its website Saturday paying tribute to Mr. Sherman's entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts.

Results of a postmortem examination will indicate whether the Shermans' deaths will be investigated as a homicide, Hopkinson said.

Mr Sherman founded Apotex Inc in 1974 and the firm says it is now the seventh biggest drug maker in the world.

In a statement, Mayor Tory said he was "shocked and heartbroken" to learn of the deaths, and noted the couple's generous contributions to the city. "As employees, we are proud of his tremendous accomplishments, honoured to have known him, and vow to carry on with the Apotex goal in his honour".

The couple was known for their philanthropy, giving tens of millions of dollars to hospitals, universities and Jewish organizations, CBC reported.

Sherman faced legal action from family members alleging they had been cut out of the company over the years.

The Shermans were among Canada's most generous philanthropists and also organized funding of charitable causes through the Apotex Foundation.

Police have issued few details about the circumstances of the deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were also among those to offer a tribute to the couple through social media. "Our condolences to their family & friends, and to everyone touched by their vision & spirit". "Toronto Police are investigating and I hope that investigation will be able to provide answers for all of us who are mourning this tremendous loss".

"I am beyond words right now", Ontario's Health Minister Eric Hoskins said on Twitter. A very, very sad day.
