CHP officer killed by suspected drunk driver Christmas Eve

I-880 in Hayward closed by accident that injured CHP officers

The slain officer, identified as Andrew Camilleri, 33, of Tracy, leaves behind his parents, siblings, a wife, a 12-year-old daughter, and two sons, ages 6 and 2.

The driver of the auto was also taken to the hospital with major injuries. A second officer in the vehicle was treated at a hospital and released.

The CHP said the crash took place around 11:32 p.m. and forced the closure of all lanes on southbound Interstate Highway 880 just north of state Highway 92 in Hayward. Police were called to the scene late Sunday evening after receiving a report about a collision involving a auto that rear-ended a CHP patrol vehicle.

CHP officials did not provide details of the injuries or the cause of the collision.

Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe an allegedly intoxicated 22-year-old - suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana - was headed home from a party when he drifted onto the shoulder and hit the parked vehicle from behind, according to CHP officials. Officer Camilleri was in the passenger seat. In addition to the CHP officer who died, one other was injured. "Today is a tragic day".

Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement that he is "deeply saddened" by Camilleri's death. "We join his family, friends and the entire California Highway Patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice".

In honor of Camilleri, Capitol flags in Sacramento will be flown at half-staff.

CHP says the driver had been drinking and was on drugs.
