Christmas Eve snow and ice expected across much of US

First Alert: Ice Tomorrow and Snow for Christmas

A white Christmas is looking likely! In 2012, 2014 and 2015, we saw snow on Christmas Day, and in 2011 we saw a big snowstorm just three days before.

Flakes and drops will begin to break out just after midnight tonight. The Monday storm brings snow or rain changing to snow before ending in the middle of the day.

The area of low pressure deepens over the Gulf of ME as it heads northeast, bringing a very strong southwest, then west wind behind it. Temperatures rising to around 32 degrees.

Cold conditions are expected to stick around, with temperatures remaining below freezing.

The snow was tapering off, and the National Weather Service said total snow accumulations would range from a dusting to around an inch. To further keep toasty on Christmas Day, do not forget to drink warm beverages and limit any time outdoors, the weather service said.

Eastward-moving low pressure will pass well to our south and east Sunday, but an associated upper-air disturbance will track farther north over our area triggering the accumulating snow across the Chicago area.

Snow moves in south of I-70 around 2pm.

Last year, WTOP reported that there had only been four years when the D.C. area had more than an inch of snow on the ground on Christmas in the past 50 years.

Snow will continue Friday night, and because of the cold temperatures, it will be generally light and fluffy.

The very reliable European model showed a high possibility of snow. An area along Interstate 80 could see up to 6 inches of snow accumulation and 50 miles per hour winds, causing whiteout conditions.

Accumulation will be quick across Worcester County, southern New Hampshire and northern CT. NWS is putting the chance of overnight snow at 70 percent from Chambersburg to Lebanon.
