Facebook lets users know when their pictures pop up

The company notes the face technology is being rolled out in most places, except Canada and the European Union, where courts have said that it violates privacy law.

"If you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged", Mr. Candela said.

The new features are being rolled out in the face of growing pressure on the company from regulators in Europe, the US and elsewhere who have criticized Facebook for spreading fake news, fostering hate speech, eroding civil discourse and trampling privacy rights.

That's a question people will be asking as Facebook rolls out new tools this week to help users better manage their identity with face recognition. It will also work to prevent catfishing and revenge porn by alerting you when your face is in someone else's profile picture.

Facebook will use facial recognition software to alert users when they appear in other people's photos, even when they are not tagged. You can also make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who has posted the photo or report it to Facebook.

"When you have face recognition enabled, our technology analyses the pixels in photos you're already tagged in and generates a string of numbers we call a template". If users don't want a drunken karaoke picture of themselves online, for example, they can not delete the photos posted online.

Additionally, users can control whether Facebook can recognize them in photos and videos using facial recognition with an on/off switch.

Both features will be turned on-or-off via a single toggle in Facebook's settings, Candela said.

"You can also look at this as a creepy reminder of exactly how much Facebook knows about you".

Facebook is also facing a lawsuit claiming that its face recognition technology violates a law in IL called the Biometric Information Privacy Act.

In a Facebook "newsroom" post entitled "Hard Questions: Should I Be Afraid of Face Recognition Technology", Deputy Chief Privacy Officer Rob Sherman compares the new tech to Kodak cameras in 1888.

Facebook had launched an automatic alt-text tool two years ago, which describes photos to people with vision loss.
