Liverpool agree world record deal to sign Van Dijk from Southampton

Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk completed a medical on Wednesday after Liverpool and Southampton reached an agreement over a £75m fee for the centre back.

A move to Liverpool will pose new challenges, especially given Klopp's preference for his team to commit its full-backs forward and leave the central defenders isolated.

Dembele has been linked with clubs in the Premier League, Ligue 1 and Serie A in advance of the January window opening.

Van Dijk joins Liverpool on a long-term deal and is reported to be earning £180,000 per week.

However, Liverpool's interest in the summer prompted a transfer request from the player which saw him forced to train alone by manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

'That is what Van Dijk has to do, take Liverpool to trophies and be Liverpool's No 1 centre-back for the next decade or so'.

"I can't wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come".

Liverpool did not ultimately make a formal offer to Southampton last summer but were ready to pay around £60 million after it became clear that Van Dijk wanted to join them.

Liverpool said they had agreed a deal with both Southampton FC and the player that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on New Year's Day.

Van Dijk will wear the No. 4 shirt upon his arrival at Anfield.

Many Saints fans will be disappointed to let yet another top player slip through their fingers to Liverpool - following the departures of Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and the now-retired Rickie Lambert.
