Obama tops Trump as most admired, Gallup poll of Americans finds

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton Retain Most Admired Titles

The former first lady, senator, secretary of state, and presidential candidate was named the most admired American woman for the 16th year in succession.

"Obama has now been named the most admired man 10 times, trailing only Dwight Eisenhower, who earned the distinction 12 times". On the plus side, it was a slightly narrower margin than last year's poll, which Obama won 22-15.

Trump came in second to Barack Obama, with the former president notching 17 percent of the vote to Trump's 14 percent.

Behind Clinton on the list were former first lady Michelle Obama, current British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and musician Beyonce Knowles.

Gallup's poll of 1,049 U.S. adults was taken from December 4-11, 2017, with a margin of error of ±4% points.

What may surprise many is that President Donald Trump is now the second most admired man in the world.

Overall, she has held the title 22 times, more than any other woman-or man, for that matter. Nevertheless, Clinton retained enough support among the public to top every other woman on the list.

Only one other man-another former president-has been this admired in Gallup's poll.

Gallup notes that this poll has been administered 71 times since 1946 and the incumbent president has won 58 of those times. "However, retaining that stature may be more challenging in coming years with her political career likely over".

Eleanor Roosevelt is a distant second, getting 13 most honorable mentions in the poll. Rounding out the top 10 for the men were Pope Francis, Rev. Billy Graham, John McCain, Elon Musk, Bernie Sanders, Bill Gates, Benjamin Netanyahu, Jeff Bezos, The Dalai Lama, and Mike Pence.
