Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes on northern Gaza

Israel says demolishes tunnel from Gaza into its territory

Two Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants riding on a motorcycle in Gaza were killed in an explosion on Tuesday which the group implied was caused by an accidental detonation during preparations for an attack.

In response, the IDF struck Hamas targets in northern Gaza.

Smoke was seen rising from the Gaza Strip, where the area where the attack was reported to have taken place.

"Despite the reports of the Palestinian side, the Israeli army did not launch strikes on northern Gaza strip", the statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces reads.

According to Conricus, the tunnel stretched from the area of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip to hundreds of metres (yards) inside Israeli territory. A third rocket was shot down by Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system.

An incomplete tunnel running for more than a kilometer from Gaza into southern Israel has been destroyed, Israel's army announced on Sunday.

Shortly afterward, Israel responded with tank fire and air strikes targeting positions of Hamas. The rocket was successfully intercepted by an Iron Dome battery. At the end of October the IDF destroyed a tunnel built by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, killing twelve terrorists from both PIJ and Hamas.

While tensions are high on the border with Gaza, the IDF estimates that Hamas is not seeking to escalate the situation and engage in a full-blown armed conflict with Israel, at this time.

"The enemy will pay the price for breaking the rules of engagement with the resistance in Gaza", the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement. The tunnel destroyed on Sunday had been discovered several weeks ago and was monitored by the military, Conricus said.

Four other Gazans, including two Hamas militants, have died since the announcement last Wednesday.
