Pep Guardiola Reveals What He Said In Angry Exchange With Nathan Redmond

Guardiola wary of bans before derby

Guardiola admitted frustration that Southampton "didn't want to play" and "were time wasting from the ninth minute".

"Losing the game the way we did in the last kick of the game after working so hard for 90-plus minutes, I was very disappointed".

Guardiola was predictably asked about Redmond on Friday, with the manager having been asked by the FA for an explanation as to his actions.

"[Guardiola] commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game, in a similar way to last season", Redmond said.

"I said [to the referee] I apologise because i couldn't control it, I was so happy like all the fans and players". What I said is what I said and what Nathan said in his statement. "If they don't believe me, I don't know what I am doing here". Redmond released a statement saying Guardiola "was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me".

Meanwhile the City manager still insisted he meant no disrespect to Southampton or their manager Mauricio Pellegrino, his former Barcelona team-mate.

Speaking to Match of the Day after the game, he said: "I was telling Nathan Redmond how good he is at the end".

"I never judge and never will judge the way my opponents play against my team", Guardiola said.

Raheem Sterling scored a 96th minute victor for Manchester City at the Etihad and broke Southampton's hearts following a valiant defensive effort from the Saints. We didn't win clearly because it's so complicated when 10 players defend in the box. Sterling also struck twice in added time in August, hitting a victor at Bournemouth and an equaliser against Everton in the only match this season rampant City have not won. "Last season he destroyed us here".

Redmond explained that "nothing negative or offensive was said towards me" and concluded: "Sadly this story is an example of lazy journalism and is a complete joke".

The Sky Blues' next outing will see them host West Ham United on Sunday, where they'll look to continue their title charge with another win.
