'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' opens with galactic $450 million box office

Is 'The Last Jedi' Too Different From Past 'Star Wars' Movies? Rian Johnson Divided Twitter With Episode VIII

Star Wars: The Last Jedi delivered on expectations, debuting with the second largest opening weekend of all-time and propelling the box office to the third largest weekend ever based on estimates.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi managed to set a record for the second-biggest Thursday night opening in North America last week.

Critical reaction to The Last Jedi has been overwhelmingly positive, meanwhile.

The Independent has contacted a representative for James Corden for comment, but none had arrived at the time of publication. The total ranked second only to the $248 million for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" two years ago.

Roughly 58% of the "The Last Jedi" domestic audience this weekend was male, and 62% of the audience was over the age of 25, according to data shared by the studio. It's set to hit theaters in China, the world's second-largest film market, on January 5.

"There are very few brands that can sustain this kind of enthusiasm and relevance", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore.

Global sales for "Last Jedi" were the third biggest for films that did not include the Chinese market during their debut weekends, Disney said. The film holds a 94 percent fresh rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney bought the franchise for $4 billion in 2012 and has seen huge success since then.

Internationally, "The Last Jedi" has collected $60.8 million from 48 countries including Britain, Germany and Brazil. It eventually took in more than $2 billion worldwide. The brand's first spinoff, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", made more than $1 billion globally past year. Fisher filmed her scenes before she died unexpectedly last December.

So now what's next for Disney?

At least five more "Star Wars" movies are in the works at Disney, including one about a young Han Solo due for release next May, followed by "Episode IX" in December 2019.
