A number of Tunisian women had said their travel to the Gulf state on UAE airlines had been delayed and some had been forced to undergo additional examination of their visas. "In the UAE, where we are proud of our experience in empowering women, we appreciate Tunisian women, respect them and value their pioneering experience", the tweet read.

"We should avoid misleading attempts".

Officials in Tunis have barred the carrier from touching down in the capital due after the airline stopped the country's women from flying to or transiting through the UAE at the weekend.

Despite the clarification, Tunisian rights groups issued a statement on Saturday condemning the UAE measures as "discriminatory and racist".

More than 8000 Tunisians are suspected to have fought with ISIL, hundreds of women among them.
