Ukraine president denies hampering anti-corruption efforts

Ukraine Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili

The vote Thursday comes after this week's attempts to arrest former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, who has become a high-profile anti-corruption campaigner in Ukraine.

General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko later acknowledged that the operation could have been carried out more effectively, but said police had acted in accordance with the law.

"He (Saakashvili) has to answer to investigators and to society regarding the accusations against him", Poroshenko said.

He previously served as governor of the southern Odessa region after being appointed by Mr Poroshenko in 2015.

A few hours before he was detained, Mr. Saakashvili had called for weekend protests against Mr. Poroshenko in Independence Square, an area in Kiev known as Maidan that was the center of the earlier demonstrations against Mr. Yanukovych. But supporters blocked the streets and pulled him from the vehicle, and he led a march to parliament.

Lutsenko has vowed to make all efforts to regain custody of Saakashvili, who was freed by his supporters from a police van in a chaotic scene on Tuesday after being detained on suspicion of assisting a criminal organisation.

"We consider it unacceptable when the leaders of any law enforcement bodies, including anti-corruption, begin to play in the political field", he told a news conference during a visit to the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

Mr Saakashvili also faces the threat of extradition to Georgia, where he is wanted on corruption charges.

Saakashvili rejects the allegations, pointing to his long record of opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
