3 quakes magnitude 5 hit Iran-Iraq border area

Residents in Baghdad felt an initial quake followed by aftershocks

A scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that so far, seven separate earthquakes have struck along the Iran-Iraq border area in the morning hours. Electricity and internet services were not interrupted in the Iraqi capital. "If there was a stressed fault that's ready to move, they happen like that until the stresses are relieved, so it's not too unusual". Six had a preliminary magnitude of at least 5 and two registered at magnitude 4, according to reports.

It is unclear how much damage was inflicted by Thursday's quake as the epicenter hit one of the most vulnerable areas in Iran's Kurdish region.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

A magnitude 4.7 quake hit western Iran on Wednesday evening, according to Mizan, the official website of the Iranian judiciary. People in Soomar rushed to the streets in panic, state IRIB TV said. The quake had left around 328 people dead.

The epicentre, with a depth of 8km, was determined to be at 33.78 degrees latitude and 45.74 degrees longitude.

On November 12, a 7.3-magnitude quake hit Kermanshah, killing more than 620 people and injuring around 10,000 others, mainly in the city of Sarpol-e Zahab and the nearby villages.

Iran is located over major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.
