Arrested After Shooting at Ellis County School: Deputies

Italy High School

Ellis County Commissioner Paul D. Perry said on social media that an unidentified 15-year-old female student was shot and wounded. He said that when the district officials became aware there was an active gunman, the district "immediately took action to get our students in a safe position".

It was unclear whether the shooter and the victim knew each other.

The injured girl, whose name was not released, was taken to hospital in Dallas, about 70 km north of Italy town. In the Class of 2016, 97.7% of students received their high school diplomas on time or earlier. Last school year there were 281 students enrolled. He said it was also working to make sure grief counseling was available for students.

Joffre would not say whether the suspect had any previous disciplinary issues at the school.

Italy ISD Superintendent Lee Joffre said the 16-year-old boy left the building immediately after opening fire in the school cafeteria about 7:50 a.m. Monday. Unconfirmed reports on USA media said one person had been injured and was being transferred to hospital.

Italy promotes itself as "The Biggest Little Town In Texas" and is located just off Interstate 35 between Dallas and Waco.

Children at the school were being moved under guard to shelter, the sheriff's office said.

No injuries have been confirmed in the shooting.
