California Rep. Darrell Issa Joins GOP Quit Parade

Republican retirements in Congress mount as Rep. Darrell Issa steps aside

He later targeted Clinton as she moved toward seeking the presidency over her response to the deadly 2012 terrorist attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.

"As evidenced by his work as Oversight Chairman, Congressman Darrell Issa is a fearless protector of integrity in government".

Issa was a national figure and a staple on cable talk shows when he chaired the House Oversight House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from from 2011 to 2015.

Rep. Darrell Issa announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year.

Republican Rep. Darrell Issa will retire from Congress in 2018, avoiding a hard campaign fight in a district that has been a primary focus for Democrats in the coming election.

His bill which has already passed the House Judiciary Committee is now gaining momentum in the House and might come up for vote soon.

On Tuesday one of Issa's California colleagues, Rep. Ed Royce, also announced that he would not seek reelection.

He almost lost his seat in 2016, besting Democrat Douglas Applegate - among the four Democrats running this year - by less than a percentage point.

In California, at the forefront of the Democratic resistance to President Donald Trump, the party has also seen an energized activist base fueled in part by the emergence of new organizations such as Indivisible. For a year, hundreds of activists have appeared weekly outside of Issa's office to protest.

"I feel like I'm going out on top at a time when a generic Republican's going to win my district and I'm going to support the nominee on my side and then I'm going to continue to be very active", he said.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee immediately released a statement crediting grassroots activism in the district.

"We look forward to facing whoever limps out of the Democrats' battle royal: black and blue, and broke", Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, the NRCC's chairman, said in a statement.

Andrew Godinich, a DCCC spokesman, said Democrats are "in a strong position" to claim the seat in November and blamed the Republican legislative agenda for Issa's retirement.
