Gerrit Cole trade to the Houston Astros is 'imminent'

Earlier this offseason the Yankees were said to be pushing to acquire Gerrit Cole from the Pirates.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a trade that will send the 27-year-old right-hander to the defending world champion Astros.

Gerrit Cole is not a member of the Houston Astros, at least not yet, after reports of the pitcher being traded were refuted or walked back.

In contrast, the Yankees could include outfielder Clint Frazier, who is now blocked by Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, or Chance Adams, who very well could have to wait to see time at the major league level with all of the talent NY has in their rotation.

Cole made his debut in the major leagues with the Pirates in 2013. Cole did top 200 innings for the second time in 2017 and also saw his strikeout numbers tick back up close to one per inning.

The story, which revealed Cole was the team's top trade target previous year before it settled on Justin Verlander, also mentioned free agents Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta as pieces the Astros could add.

Whether it's Dallas Keuchel, Verlander, and Cole or Keuchel, Verlander, and Darvish at the top of the Astros' rotation in 2018, they're going to have a formidable group. His best season came in 2015, when he posted a career-high 19 wins and career-low 2.60 ERA en route to his only all-star appearance.
