Houston Cops Find Stash of Weapons in Hotel Room

Police on Sunday arrested a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition in his Hyatt Regency hotel room downtown

Police on Sunday arrested a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition in his Hyatt Regency hotel room downtown.

Earlier this year, a man shot dead 58 people from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, Las Vegas.

It comes as cities across the United States and around the world step up security for New Year's Eve celebrations. Police were called to the Hyatt Regency after the man had too much to drink and refused to leave the bar.

The man was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing.

The 49-year-old man later told investigators he'd brought the guns into his room because he didn't want them to get stolen from his truck, which was parked in the hotel garage, police spokesman Victor Senties said.

Local reports said an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a handgun, as well as a large quantity of ammo were found in the room.

The Hyatt's Sunday night celebration spans four floors and includes live performances and a 50,000 balloon drop at midnight, according to its website. A hotel employee said the party was still on despite the "disturbance".

Cops in other cities have said they are taking extraordinary security measures around the year-end celebrations.

The Las Vegas attack, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, reignited a debate on gun control in the United States, where the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees citizens "the right to keep and bear arms". "He's intoxicated so they won't be able to interview him till he's sobered up a bit", said Lt. Gordon MacIntosh, per the Houston Chronicle.
