Intel tells users to stop deploying buggy Spectre patch, citing technical issues

Meltdown and Spectre fallout leads to first RC9 of a Linux Kernel since 2011

The firm says the patches, which began rolling out recently, were also resulting in unpredictable system behaviour.

In case you missed the previous episodes of this messy saga, Intel first admitted that recent firmware updates for Haswell and Broadwell processors could cause "higher system reboots."

Now that a fix is in testing, Intel is recommending that "OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions" to limit the impact of unexpected reboots with current updates.

After getting reports 11 days ago that some Intel-based computers were undergoing high amounts of reboots after installing patches to fix the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities the chipmaker has asked infosec pros and vendors to stop using the fix until it has been fixed.

This unfortunate development came to light Monday, when Intel issued an official statement telling a groups of its customers to just slow their roll when it comes to updating their critically vulnerable systems. But when carrying out some more intensive tasks, like browsing the internet on multiple tabs, users could see slowdowns closer to 12 percent on computers running with patched chips, Intel found.

The company says it has identified the problems behind the bug, which potentially leaves the Broadwell, Haswell, Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Skylake, and Ivy Bridge chip generations open to intrusion.

In a blog post, Intel said new patches for Broadwell and Haswell-based computers - chips that are two generations removed from the current Skylake design - are being tested by "industry partners", which nearly assuredly includes the Big Three cloud computing providers in Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google.

Meltdown removes the barrier between user applications and sensitive parts of the operating system. In a blog post published today, the company's executive vice president, Neil Shenoy, warned users of technical issues, urging them to hold off on downloading the fix until it can patch its patch. "I assure you we are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues".
