IPhone Users Beware, New iMessage 'Text Bug' Is Freezing Devices

Messages on iOS macOS crash when receiving this link

Nicknamed "chaiOS", or the "text bomb", it's a text message containing a malicious link. In the meantime, iOS users are cautioned against sending the link that can trigger the bug.

There's a new Apple "text bomb", which can cause an iPhone or even a Mac to crash and in this particular instance, the text is shared in the form of a website link on iMessage. The flaw can freeze a device and, on occasion, cause it to restart. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the upcoming software update released by Apple that patches the bug.

Masri admitted that he posted the link to get Apple's attention on the serious matter. This causes iOS to panic, and repeatedly crashes the Messages app.

According to a report from BuzzFeed's Nicole Nguyen, the security vulnerability is capable of freezing or crashing your phone if you're sent a specific link through iMessage. Masri claims to have reported the bug already.

To this, award-winning computer security expert Graham Cluley wrote on his blog: "Something about the so-called ChaiOS bug's code gives your Apple device a brainstorm".

The flaw affects iOS versions 10.0 to 11.2.5 beta 5. "... I always report bugs before releasing them".

On a Mac, the bug also slows the Safari web browser down and drains battery levels. Finding working copies of the bug isn't easy, thankfully as the link, as well as other mirrors of it, have been taken down from GitHub.

Despite his actions and multiple e-mails to Apple for comment on the bug, the tech giant has yet to respond to the concern of the fans.

We tested the bug and experienced pervasive issues that required removing the message thread and in some cases digging in to macOS and removing the whole Messages database and starting over.
