Maroubra detective fights for life after stabbing

A police officer has been stabbed and his attacker shot dead at a pub in Sydney as shocked Australia Day revellers watched

A senior policeman is in critical condition after being stabbed twice in the upper body while making an arrest at a pub in southeast Sydney.

When detectives attempted to arrest Newman, he lunged at a 45-year-old officer with a knife and stabbed him in the chest and abdomen. "Because you don't want to have to burden them with what you've seen and heard, so that's just part and parcel of what the job is".

Another witness Lara Alexander, who works nearby, said: "I was vacuuming inside where I work and then when I was out the back I heard about four or five gunshots pretty close by".

The westbound lanes of nearby Maroubra Road have been closed because of a NSW Police operation, Live Sydney Traffic tweeted on Friday.

ABC News have spoken to a witness claiming to have also heard gunshots. About four or five, ' she told Daily Mail Australia.

"I saw a man on a stretcher getting carried out of the pub and another man come out of the pub in handcuffs".

"I heard the siren was going off - police, one vehicle, two cars, three cars, six or seven police cars", he said.

Police run towards a auto park following the stabbing incident.

The officers who shot Newman were "traumatised", according to Mr Walton, who said police were "very concerned" about the injured detective sergeant's condition.

He said he walked onto Maroubra Rd in time to see scores of police officers running into the pub.

"I immediately heard sirens and I went outside to have a look".

"Everyday when we go out onto the street to protect the people of NSW, we realise we may not be coming home", he said. I didn't expect anything like this to happen in Australia especially not in Australia Day'.

Police Association New South Wales President Scott Weber says he feels for the officer and his family and his thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family.

A critical incident team from the Homicide Squad has launched an investigation into the stabbing and subsequent shooting.

The investigation will be independently reviewed and a report prepared for the coroner.
