Michigan State University students to hold march for Nassar survivors

Lou Anna Simon

The university's president and athletic director have resigned, and on Friday U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos confirmed that the Department of Education is investigating the matter and pledged to "hold MSU accountable for any violations of federal law".

The pressure on Michigan State was illustrated by the resignation of the school's president, Lou Anna Simon, just hours after the sentencing.

Nassar, who was employed by Michigan State and served as the national medical coordinator for USA Gymnastics from 1996 to 2014, was sentenced to 40-175 years in prison after more than 150 women accused Nassar of sexually abusing them.

Nassar has been sentenced to decades in prison.

USA Gymnastics says it will comply with a U.S. Olympic Committee order that calls for board to resign after the Larry Nassar scandal.

Students at Michigan State, where former doctor Larry Nassar abused some of his sexual assault victims, rallied for a planned march Friday night in support of the survivors of sex abuse.

"Every single Board of Trustees member I want them all to leave and anyone else that was a part of it", said Booker.

"He didn't report it, and he's a mandatory reporter", Stephens said, referring to those who are legally required to report sexual abuse." keeps saying that 'we didn't know.' Who should I have told?

Kyle Stephens, who was a family friend, said he molested her for years at his Lansing-area home. USA Gymnastics said it reported the sexual abuse allegations to authorities when it learned about them.

Because it's possible the Nassar accusations were botched for years because Michigan State established a culture guaranteed to mishandle such issues. His resignation comes as the NCAA is opening an investigation into the Larry Nassar scandal.

Hollis has been Michigan State's athletic director since 2008 and is well-respected around college athletics.

Dianne Byrum said she had tried to work privately on the board to change minds, but realized in retrospect she should have spoken out. When you're the head of an organization and everyone below you fails, you fail too.

People attending the rally were encouraged to fill out a postcard with the salutation of "Dear Enabler (blank)" and to send it to a member of the board of trustees. "That being said, today I am announcing my retirement", Hollis said in a statement released by the university. More than a dozen women filed lawsuits alleging the school or mishandled or ignored their rape claims against football players and other students for years.

"Student leaders have been waving their hands in the air over the years since 2011 when the Office of Civil Rights investigated the institution and said you have a challenge in how you handle sexual assault." said Santavicca. "Had she ever received any information to cast doubt on the appropriateness of that trust in Dr. Nassar, she would have reacted immediately to protect her gymnasts". "When you see things like this it's hard not to say "I'm proud to be a Spartan" because this is unbelievable".

Hollis - the second top MSU official to announce their departure this week - said in an online statement he will "fully cooperate" with further investigations into Nassar's time on campus.
