Padmavati gets green signal; Karni Sena says CBFC under pressure: 10 points

Padmavati: CBFC Finally Certifies The Film, But Only On These Conditions Including Changing The Title!

The board asked for several cuts, and a name change, before giving the film the certification for showing in theatres in India.

The special panel included Arvind Singh from Udaipur, besides Dr Chandramani Singh and professor K K Singh of the Jaipur University.

The Central Board of Film Certification has proceeded with the certification of the film on Saturday, making it a massive relief to the cast and crew of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Magnus Opum Padmavati.

Members of hardline Hindu fringe groups as well as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had criticized the film "Padmavati", accusing its director of distorting history by showing Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji as the "lover" of Queen Padmavati, belonging to the Rajput Hindu warrior clan.

According to the CBFC, the producers of the film - Viacom and Bhansali Productions - attended the feedback session post the screening and are in agreement with the changes suggested by the censor board. The Bollywood period drama is based on an epic 16th-century poem, "Padmavat", by Sufi author Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Furthermore, the filmmaker has been suggested to change the title of the film. Initially set for December 1st, 2017 release date, the makers have to pick a new date now.

Right from the shooting of the film till the release of its trailer and a song, the Rajput body has alleged that there are two elements in the film which have no historical record.

An examining committee meeting took place on December 28. Uncertainty has been looming large over the movie's release since a few months, but on Saturday, CBFC - following a examining committee meeting - said it has made a decision to give a U/A certificate to the movie subject to modifications.

According to the CBFC, the film was approached with a "balanced view keeping in mind both the filmmakers and the society". Protestors were angry over picturisation of Deepika Padukone's song Ghoomar and they also feels that the facts were not rightly shown in the film. The panellists had some reservations regarding the claimed historical events & socio-cultural aspects of the film, which were duly discussed at length, CBFC claims.

The movie had angered a group called the Karni Sena in Rajasthan and other Rajput groups. "Though visually stunning they leave a disturbing impact. They've asked for some shots to be altered", says a source.
