A respected doctor who has been in the United States for almost 40 years has been picked up by American immigration agents after the Trump administration denied his attempt to renew his green card.
The arrest was made Tuesday while Mr Niec was enjoying a day off with his daughters at a lake home he owns near Kalamazoo. "This is a man who's needed in the community and not detained in Calhoun County Jail".
Niec came to this country from Poland in 1979, brought by parents wanting a better life.
"These misdemeanors were just an adolescent making mistakes and learning from them", Niec's sister, Iwona Niec-Villaire, told WOOD-TV. "He doesn't know anyone, he wouldn't know where to go". He received his green card and has been a permanent resident of the United States since 1989.
ICE jails Polish doctor living in U.S. for 40yrs, family demands release A 43-year-old Polish-born doctor living in the United States for almost 40 years is in jail after being detained by ICE over a misdemeanor charge from his youth. In January 1992 Niec was convicted of malicious destruction of property under $100 because of an altercation between him and his sister.
The detainment is because of two wrongdoings - decimation of property under $100 and getting and disguising stolen products - that he conferred more than 25 years back. "'" said Niec-Villaire, a corporate lawyer. "No one can really understand what happened here". We believe that Dr. Niec's recent history as a contributing member of our community is far more indicative of the type of person he is than the incidents that occurred when he was a teenager. After completing probation, the case was dismissed.
The only non-driving infraction WOOD-TV found involved a 2013 domestic violence charge of which he was acquitted.
"(Niec) is a microcosm of what's happening all over the country but doesn't get publicity until it happens to a white guy from Europe living in the suburbs", Kuck said.
A statement from Bronson Healthcare said ICE cited those cases to support his arrest and detention.
Niec reportedly pled guilty to the charges under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which helps young first-time offenders keep charges off of a criminal record, but ICE does not honor the state plea agreement.
