Stephen Miller, the senior policy adviser for President Trump, lashed out at Breitbart News chairman Steve Bannon on Sunday for his contribution to a scathing book that shows the White House beset by ineptitude and disorder.
"The book is best understood as a work of very poorly written fiction, and I also will say that the author is a garbage author of a garbage book", Miller said on CNN's "State of the Union".
"It's tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive and the whole White House staff is deeply disappointed in his comments", Miller said on Sunday.
CNN has not independently confirmed all the assertions in "Fire and Fury" by author Michael Wolff, which portrays Trump allies questioning the President's mental fitness for office. The book quotes Bannon as saying a 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Trump campaign officials and a Russian lawyer purportedly offering damaging information about Hillary Clinton was "treasonous".
CNN's Jake Tapper, who was conducting the interview with White House Senior Adviser Stephen Miller, cut the conversation off after 12 and a half minutes, telling Miller he was spewing rhetoric exclusively to gain approval from the President.
During the contentious interview, Miller offered largely combative responses and focused on presenting Trump as a "political genius," repeatedly refusing to answer questions until Tapper made a decision to cut him off and move to the next segment.
Tapper countered by saying, 'I think the viewers right now can ascertain who is being hysterical'.
Miller dismissed both Bannon and Wolff's credibility, saying the author was a "garbage author of a garbage book", and that claims in the book were "a pile of trash".
Tapper said Miller was being obsequious, only caring about Trump.
In the book, Bannon predicted that the special counsel investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation would "crack" the younger Trump "like an egg on national TV".
But Tapper responded: "The president has an approval rating in the 30s, I don't know what's magical that you're talking about".
In his book, Wolff relied heavily on on-the-record interviews with Bannon, who was critical of other White House aides and Trump's children. He urged his followers to "watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"
Miller said the credit goes not to Bannon, but to Trump's first campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.
Extracts from Fire and Fury have raised questions about Trump's mental health, which in turn led to the former reality TV star to tweet he was a "very stable genius". "Thank you, Stephen", Tapper said.
