Amazon Replaces Alexa With Celebrities in Super Bowl LII Ad

Amazon Alexa Can Now Send Text Messages to Any Number in the US

A year ago the app introduced a new feature that lets users which it will then turn it into voice navigations, a route Amazon may possibly go down.

The feature, first spotted by Techcrunch, allows you to send texts to your friends and other contacts using your voice. Previously, she could only sed messages to contacts who have the Alexa app installed on their smartphone. After confirming the recipient, Alexa will ask what you want to send and then finally send the SMS using your mobile phone (carrier charges may apply).

To enable Alexa to deliver text messages to smartphones via Amazon Echo devices, you need to perform an initial setup process.

Now, before you get too far with the feature, be aware that there are some very big caveats that might give you some pause. If that fails, it'll send an SMS.

The new feature is only available in the US for now, and will only work if you have the Alexa app installed on an Android phone and have linked your phone with your Alexa device. However, the new feature is now available only in the USA and on Android smartphones.

Sending SMS feature doesn't work with third-party Alexa devices at this moment, but that could change in the future. Amazon is ruling the roost when it comes to smart speaker market share. Word is that the feature is available for all Alexa users in the US right now, but the feature doesn't function with third-party smart speakers running Alexa. Amazon's newest Super Bowl ad teases that the digital assistant "lost her voice", something that takes the world by surprise including the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Either way, the timing couldn't be better for Amazon given that Apple is releasing its rival smart speaker, the $349 HomePod, .
