Browns' run at Alex Smith ends in predictable failure

Report: Redskins to Trade For Chiefs Quarterback Alex Smith

After an impressive season, Smith became the subject of endless trade speculation and Tuesday night, the Washington Redskins made the blockbuster deal to acquire the 30-year old, sending a third-round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller to Kansas City in exchange for him.

Smith is coming off the finest season of his six-year career in Kansas City with 4,042 yards passing, 26 touchdowns, only five interceptions and a 104.7 passer rating. Smith had not only set career marks statistically in the last few months but had established himself as a victor in K.C.to the tune of 50 regular season wins in 5 seasons.

Washington has chosen to essentially swap out Kirk Cousins for Smith, a move that generated plenty of criticism.

The writing was on the wall last April that Smith wouldn't be with the Chiefs much longer, when Kansas City chose to trade up to the 10th pick in the 2017 draft and select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

To say the Alex Smith trade came out of nowhere on Tuesday night would be a very large understatement.

Until that happens, the West is up for grabs. He played with annual salaries of $19.9 million and $23.9 million as the sides were unable to negotiate a long-term deal. This means the Browns might not have to use the No. 1 overall pick on a quarterback.

Smith, 33, the NFL's top-rated passer this season, reportedly had his contract extended four years as part of the deal.

With Garoppolo locking down the job in San Francisco and the Redskins officially out of the race, Cousins' value is somewhat diminished. With Smith playing for Washington in the NFC, the Chiefs won't even play against him in the regular season until 2021.

The Browns have more salary cap room and cash to spend than any other National Football League team, which makes them an obvious potential destination for Cousins.

The Browns could wind up adhering to Cousins' request given the stability he could provide the franchise that it hasn't had for quite some time with their last playoff appearance being 15 years ago. Not only is Cleveland in desperate need of a quarterback, but the Browns are projected to possess almost $110 million in cap space this offseason, according to overthecap.com. It's probably safe to assume that new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll would love to get his hands on Cousins.

Alex Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs calls out the play on November 19, 2017 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It's all hypothetical, but a run on quarterbacks early on Day 1 could alter the type of player who gets to 14.

The addition of one of these young quarterbacks would provide them stability if the veteran quarterback they acquire ahead of the draft doesn't work out.
