Celebrating 100 years of Welsh Women

When Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903, it was the beginning of a revolution.

Publicising her book Deeds Not Words, out on the 100th anniversary of women being given the vote, Ms Pankhurst said her message to the president would be: "The world has changed - look forwards not backwards".

Objects used to chain themselves to railings, or to smash windows, are on display alongside postcards and materials such as dolls and games sold to fundraise for the cause.

'What they did was absolutely extraordinary and it is why I am here today'.

She said: "I think it's really sad that in 2018 we have as the president of apparently the most powerful place in the world someone who has done the things that he has done and speaks the way that he does.

As far as pardoning for arson, violence, as you rightly point out, that's trickier".

Today, we are celebrating the right of women to vote, to have a say in their society's future.

Mr Corbyn told his top team that the convictions of suffragettes "were politically motivated and bore no relation to the acts committed".

"Some were severely mistreated and force-fed in prison post-conviction so a pardon could mean something to their families".

It is hard to think of a more inappropriate way to mark that moment than by the government reaching back into the past and taking away from the suffragettes their ability to use the law to highlight the injustice that they were fighting. These women became known as suffragettes and soon made headlines up and down the country.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 allowed women over the age of 30 and all men to vote, enfranchising around eight million British women.

Theresa May has given her one piece of advice for aspiring female politicians - "be yourself". Her daughters Sylvia and Adela were pacifists. A Sikh princess, Sophia Duleep Singh, threw herself in front of the prime minister's vehicle.

Emmeline Pankhurst, long associated with the militant campaign for the vote, however embraced this name for the organisation she had set up in Manchester three years before. She was a trained artist and designed numerous group's posters, leaflets and logos.

Labour's shadow cabinet met at the Museum of London, now home to an exhibition on the suffragettes.

She said the suffragettes "deliberately broke the law to make a point" - for example, by demanding "no taxation without representation".

Derby Day in 1913 marked a significant moment in the movement when Emily Davison threw herself in front of King George V's horse and was trampled to death, becoming a martyr. In 1911 she hid inside a broom cupboard in the Houses of Parliament so that she might list parliament as her place of residence on the night of the census.

Tony Benn MP later placed a plaque in the cupboard himself to commemorate her act.

At least the suffragists and suffragettes were united in their ultimate goal. She then refused to pay the fine so that she would be sent to prison.

She said attitudes were also changing among men, particularly those who would have previously dismissed "feminist" arguments.
