Chicago Bulls trade Jameer Nelson to the Detroit Pistons

Report: Bulls Trade Jameer Nelson to Pistons for Willie Reed

However, it is a bit puzzling as to why Van Gundy would make a deal for 36-year old Jameer Nelson without sending out one of the point guards now on the roster. The Bulls get a little bit more cap flexibility for this offseason, while the Pistons get a veteran point guard to balance their rotation for a playoff push. Though that group has performed decently, Pistons president/coach Stan Van Gundy is getting a familiar reinforcement - Jameer Nelson.

There was a reason Jameer Nelson was acquired last week in the Nikola Mirotic trade with New Orleans, and then kept away from the media and full contact in practices.

Nelson is playing his 14th season in the National Basketball Association, averaging career lows in most major stat categories. He posted 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and shot 36 percent beyond the arc this season in 45 games, including 14 starts. Reed was acquired in the Griffin deal and was suspended earlier in the week.

Even though Reed has five more games remaining to sit out, the Chicago Bulls are immediately going to waive him when the trade becomes official, leaving them with the Detroit Pistons' second-round pick and only 16 players on the roster, making room for new players. Maybe. I doubt the present-focused Van Gundy blinked at the cost, especially considering he had no attachment to Willie Reed (who came to Detroit in the Griffin trade).

Johnson, 23, a 2016 first-round pick by the Clippers, was averaging 1.8 points this season for the Pistons. But at least he's just 27 if the Bulls want to take a flier on evaluating him for next season, and moving up in the second round only helps.

Nelson has appeared in 871 games, averaging 11.4 points and 5.1 assists.

Johnson, 23, never stepped on the court in a Pistons uniform.
