Could drinking hot tea lead to increased risk of throat cancer?

Cup of tea

Reacting to the report, experts said that there is no need to panic as most people drink tea or coffee below 65 degree Celsius.

It may be mentioned that in early stages of a tumour, no symptoms would be detected.

These symptoms include persistent indigestion or heartburn, a loss of appetite, difficulties in swallowing, and weight loss, or pain in the upper tummy, back or chest.

NECKING a scalding cuppa raises the risk of throat cancer up to five times.

Of the 456,155 people in the study, 42% of the men and 16% of the women drank tea daily. There was no connection between non-smokers and hot tea in terms of cancer.

'Although several studies have demonstrated inhibitory effects of tea against tumourigenesis in the digestive tract, chronic thermal injury to the oesophageal mucosa may initiate carcinogenesis.

A study involving almost 500,000 adults in China suggests that smokers and heavy drinkers who drink hot tea may have increased risk of developing esophageal cancer. "Most people drink their tea and coffee at a temperature that seems unlikely to cause cancer".

The researchers collected information about tobacco and alcohol consumption at the beginning of the study.

"Drinking tea at high temperatures is associated with an increased risk for esophageal cancer when combined with excessive alcohol or tobacco use", the authors write.

Lv and team studied the link between drinking tea at very high temperatures and the development of esophageal cancer in the Chinese population; China is not only the number one consumer of tea, but it is also a country with one of the of this type of cancer.

While some prior research has suggested tea may help protect against tumors in the digestive tract, other studies have shown repeated consumption of very hot food or drink might damage the esophagus and help tumors take hold, the researchers note.

Tea lovers, your cup of tea could put you at higher risk of developing cancer.

The Chinese study is being viewed as significant as it is among the world's largest studies on hot beverages and the esophageal cancer risk.

Researchers were only able to confirm oesophageal cancer from laboratory records for 569 people, and most of these were squamous cell cancer cases. Smokers who drank hot tea (but not alcohol) daily had a double risk.

The study was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. But the IARC did find that hot beverages (at least 149 degrees) "probably" cause cancer of the esophagus.
