Immigration Not on Agenda at GOP Party Retreat

US president Donald J Trump delivers the State of the Union address in the chamber of the US House of Representatives

The President, in remarks at a Republican congressional retreat in West Virginia, knocked Democrats for a lack of applause during his State of the Union address and sought to shift the onus of reaching an immigration deal on the opposing party.

Trump is taking a victory lap, stressing the newly enacted tax overhaul and efforts to reduce regulations.

In his speech Thursday, as he did during his State of the Union address Tuesday, Trump dismissed the "dreamer" lingo and appeared to urge lawmakers to avoid the term.

He suggests Democrats would prefer to see Republicans fail than see the country thrive.

"Nearly seven in 10 Americans support an immigration reform package that includes a permanent solution on [the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program], secures the border, ends chain migration, and cancels the visa lottery". "It's not 'dreamers.' Don't fall into that trap". James Lankford (R-Okla.), who supported other Republicans in the 2016 primary, said on the eve of the GOP retreat at the Greenbrier resort here. That's unclear. It's also unclear whether strong Democratic opposition to the "four pillars" approach will eventually put a narrower scope for a deal back on the table-or whether, as many observers suspect, the whole idea is to force Democrats once again into a position of shutting down the government over immigration, and in this case by rejecting a deal that's generous to Dreamers but not anyone else.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., appearing alongside Thune behind a lectern, embraced the cornerstones of the Trump plan on Thursday. In the House, conservatives have demanded a hard-line bill, with some arguing that the White House plan is too lenient on a path to citizenship.

A fight over funding last month led to a three-day government shutdown, resolved in part by a promise by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell to hold a vote on a plan to extend protections for Dreamers - young immigrants brought to the country illegally when they were children.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT said Trump's tone on immigration "was of a divider-in-chief". The White House framework represented "a good faith offer" from Trump, he said, and could provide a base bill for debate but he said it would ultimately not fly with Democrats. "But the other stuff, if the stakes get raised and then other issues enter the conversation it gets more complicated, and it gets harder to pass in the House".

"The most pressing, must-do issue that we have is immigration". Still, Democrats and Republicans in the chamber remain far apart.

Republicans are trying to call Democrats' bluff on DACA, but the Democrats look even more willing to allow a shutdown than they were last month, the analysts said.

Regardless, factions in the House and Senate continue to discuss a deal, the Post reported.

King said Trump's call to let the young, undocumented immigrants work toward citizenship over 12 years was not well received by Republican lawmakers, many of whom view such a policy as granting "amnesty" to lawbreakers.
