LAPD: Middle School Shooting Was Accidental

The scene near Sal Castro Middle School

Police received a call about the shooting at the school in the Westlake North neighbourhood at 8.55am local time and responded.

The district began requiring the daily searches with metal-detecting wands in 2011 after two students were injured in a shooting at Gardena High School, district officials said.

A total of 14 shootings have occurred on school campuses across the United States in 2018 as of Thursday, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization committed to measuring US gun violence with comprehensive and up-to-date data. The suspect was found with a weapon.

As a result, a 15-year old boy was shot in the temple, but is expected to recover and a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist. The girl, who was shot in the left wrist, was in fair condition.

Three others suffered minor injuries in the incident at Salvador B. Castro Middle School.

In a morning news conference, Los Angeles School Police Chief Steve Zipperman said he did not know how a young person got access to a gun and brought it to campus, but warned gun owners to keep their weapons secure and away from children.

"They thought it was a toy gun, but then it shot", Urbina said.

The gunfire erupted in a full classroom shortly after the morning bell Thursday and sent students fleeing.

The 12-year-old suspect, who has not been named, was arrested and booked for negligent discharge of a firearm.

"Not safe, not safe, very insecure", she said. Apparently, this shooting was an accidental discharge of just one round from inside a backpack.

The girl was taken into custody without incident after she and witnesses were interviewed, officials said.

She texted that she was sitting next to two girls who were injured.

The shooting, which took place in an elective class with children of different ages, was the latest outbreak of gun violence at a United States school.

"I'm kind of afraid for my safety", said Oswaldo Gonzalez, 11, a sixth-grader at the middle school.

A student and parent react while leaving campus at Salvadore Castro Middle School in Los Angeles, California on February 1, 2018. TV video from helicopters showed a dark-haired girl in a sweatshirt being led from the school in handcuffs as anxious parents and family members gathered on a street corner, many crying and talking on their phones as they waited.

We are fully cooperating with the Los Angeles Police Department in its investigation of this matter.
