Ronald Koeman: Netherlands appoint ex-Everton and Southampton manager

England provide first test as Ronald Koeman is announced as Netherlands manager

FORMER Everton boss Ronald Koeman has been appointed new Holland manager.

Having finished third in the 2014 World Cup, the Netherlands subsequently failed to qualify for the following two tournaments - namely Euro 2016 and the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

In a statement, the KNVB said Koeman had signed a contract "up to and including the 2022 World Cup", and he was due to speak at a news conference later on Tuesday.

The 54-year-old has been out of work since being dismissed by Everton in October following a disastrous run of form at Goodison Park.

His first match in charge of the national side will be against England on March 23. Koeman's mission is simple: build a new team and qualify for Euro 2020.

Is the pressure of managing Everton finally getting to Ronald Koeman? As a player, he won the Eredivisie on four occasions with Ajax and PSV, as well as being a part of the famous Netherlands side that won the 1988 European Champions.

The Dutchman has also worked at Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ and Feyenoord and was previously assistant at Barcelona and the Netherlands.

Advocaat left the post following Holland's failed qualifying campaign for this summer's World Cup, where they could only finish third in Group A behind France and Sweden.

He succeeds Dick Advocaat, who stepped down after the team's failure to reach this summer's finals in Russian Federation.
