Teenager Red Gerard bags Team USA's first Olympic gold medal in slopestyle

Slopestyle snowboarder Red Gerard poses with fans after the first of his second qualifying run at the Pyeong Chang Olympics on Saturday Feb. 10 2018

Snowboarder Redmond Gerard - more commonly known as simply "Red" - has won the first USA medal in Pyeongchang, taking a gold medal at the Winter Olympics with a stunning comeback win in the men's slopestyle final.

Seventeen-year-old Red Gerard, from Silverthorne, Colorado, in his debut Olympics, won the men's slopestyle snowboarding competition.

Parrot put down a near-flawless run as the last rider to go down, but it wasn't good enough to knock Gerard off the top spot.

The 17-year-old, the youngest athlete in the competition, jumped from eighth place to first with a score of 87.16 points in his third and final run. He is also the second-youngest man to win a medal in an individual event. "And [the Olympics] are just far ahead, so whatever". Teenager Red Gerard created his own piece of Olympics' history after winning the men's snowboarding slopestyle.

When his time came, Gerard nailed it. Parrot washed out in his first two runs on Sunday, failing to post a score anywhere close to podium-worthy.

The win preserves the US streak of winning gold in slopestyle, which was added to the Olympics schedule in 2014.

Gold medalist Redmond Gerard of the United States poses during the victory ceremony for the Snowboard Men's Slopestyle Final during the PyeongChang Olympic Games on February 11, 2018.

When it happened, I thought it might have been a soda.

"I don't really think I knew what the Olympics is", said Gerard, who claims he didn't grow up watching TV or fantasizing about taking Olympic runs.

"I told Red before he went out to compete this morning, 'Just ride like you're having fun with your brothers, '" Jen told Alyssa Roenigk of ESPN The Magazine. "I had a lot of pressure and my heart was beating really fast before starting on the course". "I grew up watching the X Games and Dew Tour".

Viewers could clearly hear the shocked teen say 'Holy s***' on tv as he finished his final run. Known for his innovative rail tricks, his line was one of the most imaginative of the day.

His medal came on an eventful day after an quake triggered an alert, winds disrupted events and a fire warning was issued on a day of more sub-zero cold that left athletes and spectators shivering. McMorris was edged out by compatriot Max Parrot for the silver medal.
