Brian Ortega stops Frankie Edgar, Cris Cyborg defends belt at UFC 222

Conor Mc Grer Artem Lobov

After 2017 defeats to Cody Garbrandt and Joanna Jędrzejczyk, there are now no undefeated UFC champions but Brian Ortega hopes to change that this year. In stepped Ortega, and "T-City" made the most of the short notice opportunity.

Our guy, Van, countered with the freakshow fight of a lifetime - a matchup with his own grandma!

In the co-main event of UFC 222, Frankie Edgar squared off against rising prospect Brian Ortega to fight it out for the number one contender for the Featherweight title.

Guessing he'll be a tougher test than Van's grammy. just by a little. It was his first fight in nine months, but Edgar looked fine up until the knockout. Cris "Cyborg" Justino also defended her featherweight title with a first-round stoppage of Yana Kunitskaya.

With a title shot for the victor, Edgar and Ortega entered the octagon with a lot on the line.

Dana White spoke with MMAjunkie and said of Holloway, "I just saw him". Edgar took the fight with Ortega after Holloway suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from their scheduled title fight on the card. A showdown with Max Holloway will see two young and exciting Featherweights fighting for UFC gold.

- Obviously, the featherweight title is at stake; Cyborg is the champion, she's defending the belt and the victor takes home the strap.

- I also think there is some historical standing on the line here, as is the case every time Cyborg steps in the cage, because with each win, she's making more of a case for being the greatest female fighter of all time or strengthening her case if you think she already holds that title. Edgar is known for being able to survive when he's hurt, so Ortega remained composed as he closed in for the finish.

"I knew that he was going to be in my face and pressuring me and because I have these daddy-long legs and arms I have to use my elbows because I can't extend my arms out", he said about the finish.
