Daylight saving time begins Sunday — SPRING FORWARD

It takes some people a week to adjust to Daylight Saving Time

Winter may still have a few tricks up its sleeve, but we'll be one step closer to spring when daylight saving time begins this weekend.

There's a reason it occurs at 2 a.m.

Well, once again, we're about to fall for it: On Saturday night (or maybe Sunday morning), we will go through our households and advance every clock (and every electronic device with a clock) by one hour.

But adopting year-round daylight time would mean some downsides for Florida too.

Florida passes daylight saving time bill, but what does it mean? . The governor still needs to sign the bill and it appears Congress may also have to be involved before it becomes law. In 1966, the Uniform Time Act finally standardized daylight saving time in the U.S.

Telecommute, at least for a day or so if you can, and avoid other drivers who might be feeling the effects of a lack of sleep.

When I wake on Sunday at my regular time - which will depend on the pub I was drowning my DST sorrows at the night before - I will be short by one hour. Daylight Saving Time weekend has arrived. And if that forces schools to start later, more parents would have to rush to reach work on time.

Fewer traffic deaths: During DST, more people commute and complete tasks during the daylight hours, the DOT says, when driving is generally safer.

We can debate which permanent time zone works best next year, once the Legislature returns to Santa Fe.

Standard time and the four USA time zones, it should be emphasized, were not decreed by government, but were established by the railroads early on to coordinate train departure and arrival times.

Even an hour of sleep loss can throw off your whole body's natural clock, resulting in increased risk of severe or life-threatening health afflictions.

We lose an hour of sleep, but it's a small price to pay for that extra hour of evening sunlight.

The idea of daylight saving was the brainchild of Benjamin Franklin, aka, the "early to be, early to rise" guy, back in 1784.

Florida is not the first state to consider quitting the time-change game - but sometimes the search for money and God intervenes.

Edward Miller, of Steele, is not a fan of springing forward.

The root question behind a full-time switch to Daylight Saving Time like Florida wants is would you rather have a darker morning and brighter evening than you do today?

The only power states have now is to opt out of daylight saving time, putting them on standard time permanently, such as what is practiced by Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
