Former recruiter sues Google, says white and Asian candidates were 'purged'

According to a lawsuit filed by former Google engineer Loretta Lee the tech giant’s ‘bro-culture’ lead to routine sexual harassment and lewd comments at work

The lawsuit claims YouTube recruiters past year were told not to interview applicants who weren't black, female, or Hispanic, and to "purge entirely" applications from potential employees who didn't fit those categories.

White man Arne Wilberg filed the suit in January 2018 following five years working for Google, and four years as a recruiter at YouTube, The Wall Street Journal reports.

As the The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, a lawsuit filed in January by former YouTube recruiter Arne Wilberg alleges that he was sacked for resisting what he calls illegal and discriminatory efforts to diversify Google's workforce.

"We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity".

After Damore was terminated, he and another white engineer filed a discrimination lawsuit against his former employer. The paper notes that 69% of Google's employees are men, while 91% of the company's workforce is white or Asian-a number that's stayed relatively the same for the past three years.

In response to the lawsuit, Leslie Miley, a former engineering director at Slack and former engineering manager at Twitter, tweeted about the irony of Wilberg's concern for fair labor practices, which did not seem to apply to Google's largely homogenous workforce or its gender pay gap, the subject of a Department of Labor investigation as well as a civil suit. YouTube, on the other hand, says Wilberg's allegations are off-base.

The lawsuit included a screenshot of a "weekly recap" document, outlining the company's recent hires, their ethnic background, and where the team fell short of meeting its diversity goals.

A former YouTube employee has sued Google for allegedly pressuring recruiters to only look for female, black, and Hispanic or Latinx applicants.

Did YouTube use diversity "quotas" and other similar practices to discriminate against White and Asian men?

In March 2017, a YouTube staffing manager emailed recruiters to ask them to consider only "candidates that are from historically underrepresented groups" for certain positions, Wilberg claimed. It's also alleged that management deleted emails and other records about diversity requirements late past year.

"However, numerous claims made in Wilberg's lawsuit seem to corroborate Breitbart News" previous reporting.

It is not the first time the company is criticized over its diversity practices.
