New Alexa setting makes follow-up questions much easier to ask

Alexa's random creepy laughter is freaking out Echo users

As per a CNET report, Follow-Up mode enables Alexa to continue listening for five seconds after an initial response to check whether the user has an additional request. Amazon also says that Alexa will only respond to follow-up requests that she's reasonably sure are actually requests for Alexa, so there may be some hits and misses in the early days as Amazon's computers figure out how best to hear what you're asking without the original wake word in the beginning each time. Amazon is calling the new setting "follow-up mode", and while it won't let you nest one request into another, it will let you ask make multiple requests back to back. If the user does not say anything then Alexa will go to sleep. This is marked by the blue ring on an Echo device that stays lit up. For example, one would not be able to ask Alexa to change the temperature and turn off the lights in the same breath but can make one request and back it up with another without needing to repeat "Alexa".

Amazon said its planned fix will involve disabling the phrase, "Alexa, laugh", and changing the command to "Alexa, can you laugh?"

Amazon's explanation is that #Alexa is programmed to laugh when it hears the words, "Alexa, laugh" and that the home assistant must be picking up sounds that sound like this phrase.

Even if she occasionally laughs creepily at you for no reason, Alexa is still a pretty helpful digital assistant.
