NPP's Conrad Sangma stakes claim to form government in Meghalaya

Meghalaya poll results: Congress single largest party, state elects hung assembly

Sangma accompanied by BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma met Governor Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhawan in Shillong on Sunday evening and submitted the letter of support from 34 legislators.

The UDP chief said that Mukul Sangma of the Congress, the single largest party in the election, offered him chief ministership on a two-and-a-half year sharing basis between his party and the Congress.

While BJP won 2, NCP has 1, HSPDP has two seats and there are three Independents and one MLA belongs to a smaller party Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement.

All other parties have backed the leadership of NPP, which 19 seats.

"I am confident that the regional parties and the BJP will form the government in Meghalaya together".

Assembly elections in Meghalaya have thrown up a hung verdict on Saturday, making post-poll alliances crucial to government formation in the northeastern state.

The regional National People's Party emerged the second largest party by winning 19 seats, while the United Democratic Party won six, the People's Democratic Front got four, and the Bharatiya Janata Party won two.

It may be mentioned that the NPP, which is a coalition partner of the BJP at the centre and in Manipur, will align with the BJP, which managed to secure only 2 seats.

The Congress has also rushed senior leaders Ahmed Patel and Kamal Nath to Shillong.

Sangma, son of veteran leader late P.A. Sangma, said results were still coming but the NPP will be in a position to form the government with the help of other parties.

The Congress won 21 seats out the 59 that went to polls last month.

Agatha, a union minister during the UPA rule, could become the first woman chief minister of Meghalaya.

With voters in the state having a history of voting for individual candidates and not the party they belong to, the poor performance of the BJP is not surprising. Mukul Sangma, the outgoing CM, won the election from both seats he contested.

Following his meeting with Prasad, the NPP leader said that his party MLAs are committed to the development of the state and its people.

UDP chief Donkupar Roy had said that his party would support that group which is able to provide "a stable government".
