Spring Clocks Forward Saturday, Check Smoke Detectors

WSFA 12 News is teaming up with the American Red Cross to launch its

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -This Sunday, when you set your clock forward one hour, keep in mind to check the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), about two-thirds of home fire deaths occurr when no smoke alarms were present or failed to operate.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio will provide and install free smoke detectors.

"Smoke alarm technology has advanced and many now come with 10-year batteries and some are tamper-resistant", said State Fire Marshal Jim Walker.

Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms do save lives. Any alarms with a manufacture date of March 11, 2008, or earlier should be replaced.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire. Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years, test them monthly and clean them regularly. Eighty percent of fatal home fire victims who were children were killed in homes without working smoke alarms.

-Have an emergency exit plan in case of a fire.

Join this Red Cross effort today by volunteering to install smoke alarms in your community, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires.

At least once a month, press the test button on smoke alarm. "They may have still tested positively but you want to make sure you have a little bit newer technology", says Guetschow. If the alarm chirps, replace only the battery.
